  人類を 救ふは外にあらざらめ 只人間の悪を除るより
142

No other way is
There to save humanity
Than to remove
The evil that resides
In human beings.

    小賢き 人のみ殖えて真なる 智慧ある人の乏しき世や
143 Indeed, it is an age in which
Only increases the number of
Smart alecks while
Scarce are those individuals
Of true wisdom.
#2, S6-235B

Such is the contemporary world
Where only the number
Of wise guys increases,
While fewer and fewer people
Have true wisdom.

With the ever-increasing number / Of egotistical, deceitful people / in this world, / Individuals who have true wisdom / are becoming scarcer.

In our world today, / While men of deceit, ego, / Increase in number, / Those who possess true wisdom / Become scarcer and scarcer.

Sounds of the Dawn translation
Alas, the cunning, / Shrewd ones increase in number! / In today’s mad world, / Those who have the true wisdom / Are growing more and more scarce.

Prayers and Poems translation
In our world today, / While people of deceit and ego, / Increase in number, / Those who possess true wisdom / Become scarcer and scarcer.

Book of Gosanka translation
What a sad world ‘tis, / Where just those who are crafty / Increase in number; / There is not enough of those, / Who use wisdom gifted them.

事故多き 此頃の世ぞ儚けれ 頭の悪き人の増ゆれば

144 Ephemeral is this world
With so many accidents and
Incidents, as increases so much
The number of individuals
With feeble brains.
