The Spirit Precedes the Physical

I will discuss the relationship between the realm of inorganic substance, as explained in the previous chapter, “The Realm of Inorganic Substance,” and disease in human beings. To repeat, the realm of inorganic substance is what we call the spiritual world. Human beings are composed of a close union of spirit and body. Needless to say, anyone can comprehend that the body is composed of substance which is visible to the human eye. The spirit can not be seen with human eyes, but it does most certainly exist, however, in a form much akin to ether.
The spirit of the human being lives in the spiritual world in the same way that the physical body of a human being lives in the world composed of atmosphere. As I previously described, the spiritual world is made up of a fine, transparent substance that is thinner than air, so it is the same as material nothing, but the spiritual world is not nothing, it is the source of absolute and unlimited energy. The essence of the spiritual world is a fused unity of the spirit of the sun, the spirit of the moon, and the spirit of the earth, an ethereal and mystical world beyond imagination.
For the moment, let us call this fused unity cosmic power. Through this cosmic power, all in creation is born and grows, but with growth, impurities accumulate for which purification is activated. Purification is the same as the bath that is necessary to remove the grime that has accumulated on the physical body of a human being. What occurs is that as impurities accumulate in the spiritual world, they concentrate in one specific place, and natural purifying activity generates which forms a low pressure area that acts as a cleansing action. The fires caused by lightening and even man-made fires all perform the same function. Of course, in the same way, as impurities accumulate in accordance with the precedence of spirit over physical, purification activity generates within human beings. I will now examine this process in detail.
1That which accumulates on the human spirit are impurities, that is, clouds, and these clouds of opaque spots generate on the human spirit which is transparent. There are two causes for these clouds. One kind is generated on the spirit itself, and the other type of cloud is reflected from the physical body. I will first explain the types of clouds that are generated on the spirit itself.
The insides of the human spirit consist horizontally of three centripetal folds. Conversely, from the center or what is called the soul, these folds could be considered centrifugal. The soul is a dot that, as a human being comes into this world, first goes from the male to reside in the womb of the female. The soul is covered by what some call the heart and others, the mind. And covering the heart or mind is the spirit, so whatever happens in the soul is conveyed exactly to the mind and thus to the spirit. The opposite works as well, from spirit to mind to soul. In this way, the soul, mind, and spirit are a trinity in a mutual relationship.
Of course, every human being who has been endowed with life, in the course of that life, performs both virtuous and evil acts. When the amount of evil outweighs the virtuous, evil predominates, and impurities form that cloud the soul. Step by step clouds in turn cloud the mind, which then cloud the spirit. Accordingly, through the generation of purification activity, clouds are dissolved and eliminated. In the process of accumulating, the amount of cloud is compressed, and as it grows denser, hardens, collecting in one or several areas throughout the body. Interestingly, the places where the clouds solidify differ by the type of sin committed. Sins committed with the eye, for example, will cause clouds to gather in the eyes; with the head, that is, “intellectual crimes,” in the head; with the chest, in the chest, and so forth.
Next I would like to describe the kinds of clouds that are reflected to the spirit from the body. This is exactly the opposite process which occurs when clouds are reflected from the spirit to the body, so when clouds are reflected from the body to the spirit, the first thing that starts to happen is that impurities are generated in the blood, and thus cloud the spirit. Within what is known as the physical body of the human being, blood is the materialized form of spirit, and conversely, the spiritualized form of blood is the spirit. The spirit and the body are one. Therefore, as the clouds become denser, they reflect to the physical body and become impure blood. As this impure blood grows denser, it hardens. This hardened portion dissolves and becomes liquified, and is eliminated from different parts of the body. The pain, or suffering, that accompanies this elimination is sickness or disease.
That which is reflected from the physical body is of course impure blood. Why impure blood comes about is rather surprising. The cause of impure blood is the centerpiece of modern medical treatment, drugs, pharmaceuticals, medicines. “Medicines” are all poisons, so when medicines are introduced into the physical body, impure blood is created. The facts clearly show this: while under medical care, a disease will last longer than it should and even worsen. For this reason, it is not peculiar that complications and secondary diseases occur.
Thus, the impure blood that is formed from the drugs used in medical treatment is reflected to the spirit where it becomes clouds, and these clouds become the basis of disease. Actually, the very therapies of current medical science become the way in which disease is created. However, a law of all creation is that the spirit takes priority over the physical, so it is only natural that as long as clouds on the spirit are not eliminated, a complete recovery will never be effected. My healing therapy, on the contrary, adheres to the principles thus far described. Through “purifying” (joh) the “spirit” (rei), disease is healed at the fundamental level. This is what I call Johrei. Contemporary medical science has developed to this day on the basis of ignoring the spirit and treating of only the physical body. Therefore, even though it might be said that medical science has made great progress, it is only temporary healing. As the facts show, medical treatment is not real, complete healing. In many instances, even with recovery, there are recurrences. In the case of appendicitis, for example, the affected part is cut out, so inflammation of the appendix will not occur again, but it becomes easier for inflammation to occur in areas near the appendix and also for the occurrence of various kinds of diseases in the kidneys. These complications occur because the clouds on the spirit still remain and as pharmaceuticals are used in treating these conditions, impure blood is increased, so the location where impure blood accumulates, changes.
This is the significance of the transformation of impure blood. Through the constant purification process that occurs within the body, impure blood becomes denser, and the blood corpuscles gradually whiten. This whitened blood matter is pus. What is called bloody pus is a mixture of blood and pus which is in a state of transformation that ultimately turns into pus. A good example where impure blood can be observed in various states is the sputum of tuberculosis patients, some of which is mixed with blood and other which is not, most likely due to the reasons outlined above. What medical science describes as red blood corpuscles and white blood corpuscles is what I am talking about, and in medical science this process is called phagocytosis.
The above I am sure has provided a good understanding of the relationship between spirit and the physical body, so I would like to proceed to a discussion of the source of the generation of germs, pathogens.

“Reishu Taiju,” was originally published as the eleventh chapter of Kekkaku no Kakumeiteki Ryōhō (Revolutionary Therapy for Tuberculosis), August 15, 1951, page 42, and later, while Meishu-sama still alive, heavily revised in manuscript as the thirteenth chapter of the second part (on healing) of a book that was projected to be called Bunmei no Sōzō (Creation of Civilization) but not published while Meishu-sama was alive. This 1951 version of “Reishu Taiju” has appeared in translation. Citation is given below for reference.
