Spiritual Diseases
Now, I will discuss the matter of spiritual diseases, and these are diseases caused by spiritual possession. Since the types of spiritual possession are of great variety, I will discuss these in an orderly manner, one by one.
Cancerous Diseases
The most widely occurring and intractable cancerous disease is probably stomach cancer. Previously I explained in detail what I call pseudo stomach cancer which is caused exclusively by medicinal toxin, so here I explain spiritual possession which is the cause of genuine stomach cancer. The spirits that cause genuine stomach cancer are usually the spirits of snakes. These snakes had been killed by those possessed in previous lives or by the ancestors of these possessed, and to avenge themselves, the spirits possess and torment the possessed. The symptoms will extend to the entire abdominal region but the actual physically diseased part will be like a small snake, sometimes curled up and at other times, long and winding, and moving around as if swimming. When it moves, there will be that such as acute pain, unpleasantness, and loss of appetite, and if closely observed, that movement can be detected. Whatever it may appear to be, it is a spirit, so even if the flesh were cut open, what was supposed to be at the location of the disease at the time of diagnosis cannot be found, and the reason it cannot be found is because the invisible spirit of the snake moves around.
Characteristics of the snake are that it has a strong sense of attachment and will seek revenge even across generations. Genuine stomach cancer is relatively easy to heal but even a snake spirit can be quite malignant. It is these kinds of snakes that as human beings in a previous life committed sin due to attachment, fell into the world of beasts, and were reborn as snakes. While these spirits lived as snakes, however, because they ate various kinds of living creatures, the grudges of those living creatures remain in the snakes, and then the spirits are reborn as human beings again. The collection of these grudges torment the human beings in revenge. The various sufferings are reflected on to the human beings so the conditions are quite complicated and difficult. Symptoms of this type of cancer may not appear until middle age, but from this stage present violently. In the beginning, the symptoms are that such as loss of appetite, pain, and unpleasantness, but as the disease progresses, the spirit of the grudge becomes one or two physical clumps which can be identified physically by touch, and the patient starts to vomit.
With further progression of the condition, a kind of slimy gob forms in the stomach which gradually increases in volume until it fills the entire stomach. At this stage, appetite completely disappears, so a finger may be inserted into the throat in an effort to induce vomiting. With this effort, the amount of slimy gob decreases by a little, and since to that extent the stomach is evacuated, liquid diets are introduced. But gradually eating becomes impossible, and death from overall weakness results. The slimy gob is the materialized form of the possessing spirit, so the more the gob, the more the amount of living creatures that had been ingested. It is no mistake to determine that the condition where a lot of slimy gob is vomited is a case of genuine stomach cancer. There are rare occasions, however, when a lot of slimy gob is vomited and the cause is not stomach cancer, but in these cases, the gob is a very thin liquid, so it is easily distinguishable. In any case, vomiting thick gobs of slime is a symptom of genuine cancer.
Next I will discuss rectal cancer which is a cancer that forms in the rectum and does not move but is stationery. Because the rectum is the passage through which excrement passes, the cancer blocks the passage of excrement. Medical treatment cuts out the cancer with surgery, and since the path for excrement disappears, an artificial rectum has to be constructed next to the abdomen, so there is nothing worse. Since the passage is always open, as the excrement accumulates, it continually exits the passage, so the patient has to wear diapers like an infant, and with extreme bodily movement, there is the danger that the artificial rectum may protrude from the abdomen, the resulting pain which is not ordinary. Most people cannot help lamenting that it would have been better to die. Rarely there are those who actually spend their whole lives in tears. This condition results from the deed of trying to prevent the purification of sins from former lives, that is to say, the sin of a criminal having given a bribe in order to get penalties reduced, and such sin as overlooking shameful behavior due to greed.
Next is uterine cancer which is rather prevalent. Uterine cancer results from the sin of induced abortion, whether in this life or previous ones. What happens is that the spirits of aborted fetuses who get bounced around in spiritual darkness form grudges that attach themselves to the womb. Rarely there is a condition called vaginal cancer, and this sin stems from immoral relations with a man.
Another instance of cancer caused by spiritual circumstances is laryngeal cancer which occurs in those who are poulterers or were so in their former lives. Most of these cases stem from the grudges held by the spirits of those birds who had had their necks wrung when being killed. Then, there is cancer of the tongue, caused by sin resulting from the tongue. It is a sin that stems from the grudges of those who have run into trouble or have experienced suffering due to words. In addition, one related sin that does not receive much attention is the sin from that such as mistaken theories, evil thought, and heretical propaganda that misleads many individuals and poisons society. Such is a rather grave sin because the harm it causes is so great.
And finally there are types such as buccal mucosa cancer and fistula cancer, but these are quite rare, and they are caused by the grudges that resulted from having caused injury to the affected regions of the physical bodies of the possessing spirits.

“Reiteki Byōki, Ganbyō” is the first subsection of three of the second chapter, “Reiteki Byōki,” of the third part, “Religion,” of the manuscript for Bunmei no Sōzō (Creation of Civilization) that remained unpublished as a whole during Meishu-sama’s lifetime, although Meishu-sama did publish some of the separate chapters in the periodicals as “previews.” Of the eight essays printed in the anthology Igaku Kankei Goronbun Shū ([Collected Essays on Medical Science], a book of limited circulation which contains no publication data, but whose internal evidence suggests its editing stopped several months preceding Meishu-sama’s Ascension.) that purport to be from Bunmei no Sōzō, two essays had been published in the newspaper. Five essays are chapters that were never published while Meishu-sama was alive, and these are problematic because the origins of Igaku Kankei Goronbun Shū’s origin itself are problematic. “Reiteki Byōki, Ganbyō” has appeared in translation.
