Spiritual Diseases: Mental Illnesses and Epilepsy
What accounts for the greatest portion of spiritual diseases are mostly likely mental illnesses and epilepsy. To start with mental diseases, these are completely diseases of spirit and have no direct connection to the physical body, as is obvious from the fact that even physically healthy individuals may come down with a mental condition. In these diseases, as is well known, individuals lose their mental conditions as ordinary persons and their consciousnesses becomes confused, but in these states as well, there are many varieties, depending upon the individual. Not only can the same one individual change in an assortment of ways, these changes can manifest many times in one day, and even within one hour.
For some time now, medical science has continued to undertake research on mental diseases, but at present these are still not understood and no progress can be observed in therapeutic results. What can be seen only amounts to increases and improvement of facilities and a wide range of treatments for patients. In any case, even though there be no threat to life itself, much assistance is required from family members, so as long as these are difficult diseases to deal with, patients must be hospitalized. At present public facilities lack the capacity to respond to the demand, and private facilities are quite expensive, creating misery itself. Lately, brain surgery has come to be performed to treat mental diseases and epilepsy, but these treatments appear to have no results. Medical science is based on material science, so it is not unreasonable that solutions are sought in surgery, but the link these diseases have to the physical is very tenuous, and since the activity and function of spirit predominates, the only choice that remains is to heal these diseases spiritually. Let me explain the reason here.
As described above, mental illnesses and epilepsy are spiritual diseases. The cause of these spiritual diseases is spiritual possession. In cases of spiritual possession, the possessing spirit is limited to taking over the front part of the head, the frontal lobe. Spirits who would possess living human beings occupy this area because spirit of that living person is sparse and weak there, in other words, weak due to localized cerebral anemia. The cause of this anemia is as I have described in previous chapters. Toxin is apt to gather at and collect in the area around the neck, and these toxins solidify in the afterbrain and lymph glands. This solidified toxin puts pressure on the blood vessels, so the amount of blood going to the head and brain decreases.
Before explaining why spirits possess living human beings, it is necessary to know about and understand the spiritual world. The spiritual world is the third dimension along with the first dimension, the material world, and the second, the atmosphere. The spiritual world is even more intangible than the atmosphere. It is a world that until today has been held to be nothing. Thus, up to the present, apart from particular groups of persons, the general public for the most part has not believed in the spiritual world. The general public has not believed in the spiritual world because material science has not progressed to the point of being able to grasp and understand it. Actually though, the spiritual world is more important than the phenomenal world or the atmosphere. It is the world that generates power for all in the universe. Every thing on earth is born and develops due to the power or energy generated in the spiritual world. In other words, our material world is the outside, and the spiritual world is the inside.
In the case of the human being, the physical body belongs to the phenomenal world and the mind (emotions and reason) belongs to the spiritual world. Thus, at death the physical bodies of both human beings and animals abandon the physical world and their spirits are attached to the spiritual world. With death, the physical body stops functioning and only the spirit remains forever. On a related note, of all the animal spirits who go to live in the spiritual world, it is the spirits of foxes, badgers, snakes (dragons), and such that possess the spirits of human beings. It is one part of the forehead, the frontal lobe, of the human being, as I just said, where its spirit can become sparse and weak. If the spirit of the human being were sufficient, animal spirits could not possess. More specifically, suppose the sufficient amount of spirit were ten and that there was a deficiency of spirit of one, then the amount of spirit would be nine. Only to the amount of one could be possessed. The deficiency may increase to the amount of two and to three, and if the amount becomes five and over, the possessing spirit can control that much. The human spirit loses out and the possessing spirit takes the freedom of the human being. This is the true cause of mental illnesses.
In which case, the cause of mental illnesses is brain anemia that results from the pressure caused by solidified lumps of toxin. If the cause were merely anemia, there would be no problem, but as pressure on the afterbrain, the medulla oblongata, precipitated by anemia results in sleeplessness, the condition is terrifying, because in the beginning stages of mental diseases, without exception nights of sleeplessness continue. The reason for this is that normally, anemia in the brain is a physical symptom, but in spiritual terms, it means that in that part of the body, spirit thins or weakens, and becomes what could be called “weak spirit.” In parts where there is weak spirit, evil spirits take advantage of the lack of spirit in that region and to the extent of the spiritual deficiency can possess the physical. When possessed, the possessed takes on a character not as in human beings but in accordance with animalistic desires, and behaves accordingly. These constitute the symptoms of mental diseases. To speak to the percentages of what kinds of animal spirits possess, foxes, 80%; badgers, 10%; and various other kinds of spirits make up the remaining 10%.
The above describes genuine cases of mental illness, but there is a surprising fact here that people do not perceive. That is, to the extent that it could be said to include everyone, people today have light cases of mental illness. Of course, the cause is because in almost all of the general population their brains are defective to various degrees. Even in the good cases, at least 10 to 20% of the brain is affected. Ordinary people are at about 30 to 40%. An affected condition up to about 40% is permissible, but when the amount exceeds 50%, the condition becomes grave since it turns into a genuine case of mental illness. Spiritual possession, however, is not a fixed condition. Possession or non-possession and levels of possession are always in flux. The condition corresponds to the defect, and what this means is that the density of spirit is always changing: decreasing and increasing. And then again, there are two types of possessing spirits, animal spirits who permanently possess individuals from birth and then there are spirits who temporarily possess individuals after birth. I will now explain these spirits in detail.
To begin, when life is formed in this world, a tiny dot, the soul, also comes to reside within the human being, as previously described. The soul is a small, portioned part of God. The soul is the center of the human being, the “main character,” so to speak. The soul is the primary guardian spirit or what I call “the primary spirit.” The next guardian spirit is one that is continually with and protects the human being for its entire life. This is the genuine guardian spirit, or simply, “the guardian spirit.” This spirit is selected from among the individual’s ancestors who have completed a reasonable amount of training in the spiritual world, are suitably qualified, and that are tasked with the role of protecting individuals for life. The third guardian spirit attached to human beings is the secondary guardian spirit or simply “the secondary spirit.” The secondary spirit is an animal spirit and has the role of performing that which is necessary to maintain and continue life in the physical world. Now, to an explanation of these three “guardian” spirits that reside within each human being.
The above are in general terms the proper guardian spirits that most human beings possess. The first spirit, the primary spirit, the soul, is an apportioned part of the spirit of God, so its essence is good itself which is well illustrated by the concept common since ancient times that “human nature is fundamentally good.” The second spirit, the guardian spirit strives to help the individual in its charge avoid danger. Since danger occurs first in the spiritual world and the guardian spirit learns of it, the guardian spirit can guide its charge to keep away from the danger. We often hear of people who “somehow felt that…” or “were reluctant to ….,” and such cases are where the guardian spirit has warned the individual. Guardian spirits also try to keep their charges from committing crimes when the charge may be so inclined, continue warnings about becoming involved with evil matters, and strive to form their charges into proper human beings. The best method for encouraging such behavior is faith in the gods or buddhas for which the guardian spirit constantly provides guidance. No matter how much the guardian spirit may strive, however, there are times when it will encounter an evil spirit of extreme power by which it is overcome. Such loss is serious because it invites misfortune and unhappiness. To prevent such occurrences, the guardian spirit is always seeking power to overcome evil spirits. To obtain such power, its charge, the human being should join an admirable faith. The instances where individuals are led to join World Messianity increase day by day.
The third spirit, the secondary spirit is an animal spirit, so it ceaselessly fulfills the role of evil by striving to get its charge to think about and perform evil. In the end, what evil stands for is the fulfillment of physical desires. All human beings want money, desire the opposite sex, covet fancy luxuries, seek high status, long to appear grand, would like to win at gambling, yearn to get ahead, and hope for everything to go their way. Desire for that of all dispositions continues to gush forth without limit. Because of this, for centuries, faiths have trained human beings to suppress their desires, their instincts. Due to this training, so far humanity has been able to avoid the ruin of society for which we should be grateful. But as a practical issue, it would have been a tremendous problem if the desire for the material had been eliminated in human beings because the essential energy for activity would have been lost. This point is most delicate and difficult, but what to do about this problem is not that difficult. It is sufficient that good, the conscience, bestowed by God be made to manifest in order to prevail over the evil of the beastly nature. Even so, there is a limit.
The limit is that neither good nor evil should decisively win. This meaning can be well illustrated by an explanation of 人, the Chinese ideogram for “person.” The left side descends from heaven and represents the portion of God’s spirit. The right side, which represents beasts on the planet earth, stretches up to heaven and supports the left side. Thus, the left side keeps the right side in check. The two ideograms for the word “human being,” which literally means “person between,” are quite applicable here. That is, the human being possesses both good and evil. There is no mistake if good predominates naturally even a little, so if individuals improve, they can reach the level of the divine, and if they continue to decline, they sink to the level of the beasts. In accordance with this principle, human beings can control to a certain extent their unlimited greed, so if they cross a certain limit, they cease to be a human being and turn into the shape of X. X means nihil and so the individual perishes. Thus, human beings cannot rest easy unless they have the power to control evil, and that power is bestowed by God for which faith is necessary. With faith, one can be an eternally fortunate person without anxiety in whatever conditions the world may be experiencing.
As I have outlined in the truth above, genuine guardian spirits have learned during training in the spiritual world how to appropriately and resolutely guide their descendants. But, because the secondary spirit has the opposite mission, it earnestly seeks to obstruct and guide the individual to evil, so within the human heart (mind) these two spirits are continually in conflict. Probably everyone has experienced this conflict, but to only understand this relationship is not all there is. It is also necessary to understand the following point. That is, each human being has its own characteristics and abilities. Thus has been bestowed upon us the way God created the world. To assist in a world so constituted, the guardian spirit singlemindedly works in serving God’s will to fully manifest within its charge its innate disposition for God. As methods to fulfill this role, the guardian spirit provides instances for the individual to suffer so that the individual may polish its spirit which is training for improvement. And this training, depending on the individual’s destiny, differs to various degrees. For example, the greater the destiny of individuals, the greater the hardships they face for which they should be joyful. That is true in my case and that of others as well. Then again, a change in fate is an order from God to change one’s work and is transmitted through the genuine guardian spirit.
Among divine beings, there are differences in rank. Because as in the human world there are distinctions due to roles, directions are transmitted by a divine being of corresponding rank. To describe this, I write in terms of the human world. Put in easily understandable terms, humanity has immeasurable distinctions horizontally, with differing abilities to match, and when viewed vertically, there are distinctions of upper, middle, and lower. To illustrate, an individual, leader, or leaders may control one specific ethnicity, one region, or nation, bestowed with the appropriate abilities for the role of administration. Those individuals who climb to the highest positions amount to only a few persons in the world, but the lower the level becomes, the more the number of individuals increases. That the greatest number of individuals are at the lowest levels is in line with this meaning. In the divine economy, there is no deficiency nor excess, and all is appropriately and skillfully placed. Divine will, so profound and subtle, is not at all comprehensible to human understanding. The point about distinctions and balance is made a bit clearer when illustrated by the mineral kingdom. From the higher levels are diamonds, followed by platinum, gold, silver, copper, lead, iron, and that those at the upper levels are produced in fewer amounts than those at the lower levels which have the higher rates of production makes the comparison obvious. The truths about humanity and society are recognizable when this fact is understood. How mistaken is class warfare should be obvious when viewed with this principle.
To return to the main topic, I will continue my explanation of mental illnesses, and it is hoped that this explanation will be read with the understanding that it is from a new, differing perspective. Even persons of high levels of authority in society often become confused, have mistaken thoughts, and perform unreasonable deeds. I just don’t understand how such an influential person could so such a thing. It’s so unexpected for such a mistake to be made. And, from history as well, we often see instances of great heroes getting bewitched by insignificant women and thus forfeiting the results of countless successes. These cases occur because, as previously described, when the lack of spirit is 20% or under, there is no cause for concern, but with success and continuous good fortune comes conceit and inordinate desire, so lack of spirit in the brain increases. This increase of deficiency is utilized by animal spirits to possess those deficient areas and also allows the secondary guardian spirit to rise to the brain and do as it wants. When the deficiency rises above 30%, one’s wisdom becomes clouded, good thoughts turn to bad, and failures of great scope are committed, instances of which are quite frequent in the accounts of heroes and other such personages. But, no matter how high the level of authority, or how influential, famous the individual, animal spirits, that is, evil spirits possess those without faith, and that possession is made to be thought to be a good thing. Wiles and cunning adroitly used are impossible to detect. As a result, great mistakes are eventually made, so deficiency of spirit is truly terrifying.
What one must particularly be mindful of is that the more the means employed are for the purpose of self-interest, the more increases the scope of failure. Conversely, the more one’s purpose is for the public good, based on a love for others, failure will be limited to a certain extent and future recovery, possible. In the former case, there are no divine blessings, but in the latter cases there are blessings.
In the spiritual world, as countless numbers of evil spirits blatantly rampage in pandemonium, they will possess anyone when the slightest crack appears. Deceiving others, causing bewilderment and confusion, having evil come to be committed, and getting others to fall into unfortunate situations are the instincts of evil spirits, so relaxing guard even a little is to be avoided. The defender against letting down one’s guard is the guardian spirit, so great energy must be extended to the guardian spirit which is accomplished by embracing faith and receiving power from God.
The other topic is epilepsy which resembles mental illness but actually differs. Epilepsy is a condition where dead spirits possess a living person. The best illustration of this is that as an epileptic seizure occurs, subjects come to resemble the condition of the possessing spirit at the moment of death. For example, when the dead spirit of someone who died from drowning possesses, the possessed individual’s condition presents with frothing at the mouth accompanied by struggling and suffering. Then again, there is a condition I call “water epilepsy” where the sufferer experiences a seizure at merely seeing water and it occurs when the possessing spirit died in a previous life from an accident or incident of falling into water and the terror at the moment of death remains. In the case of “fire epilepsy,” individuals died during incidents related to flame and conflagration. Other conditions involve deaths from beasts, snakes, insects and such that cause seizures from just seeing the causes of death in former lives.
Another condition connected to epilepsy is where people experience seizures when they become surrounded in crowds, and this condition is caused by spirits who died by being trampled in a crowd. Experiencing fear from boarding trains and having people approach from the behind are also causes of epilepsy. Previously was the following peculiar experience. There was a man who could not stay at home when no one was present. He could not bear being alone and would go outside the household gate, stand, and wait for someone to come home. This is also an example where in a previous life death occurred from a sudden illness or some such, alone in terror in a house. There are many more examples, but I believe the above provides readers with sufficient understanding.
In the same vein, I will write about cases of genuine infantile paralysis. Cases of genuine infantile paralysis are largely caused by the spirits of grandparents who died from anemia in the brain. These individuals were without faith in a previous life and did not believe in the existence of the spiritual world, so they went to the spiritual world not realizing they were dead and thought they were still alive, but because they did not have the essential physical body, they desperately sought a physical body. Because one of the rules of the spiritual world holds that in such cases, the bodies of non-related persons cannot be possessed, these spirits pursue those on their own spiritual lineage living in the physical world. Spiritual lineages are linked by spiritual cords, and because children are easy to possess, grandchildren are often sought out and possessed. In these cases, fevers persist for several days, and the possessed become demential and paralyzed. Because these symptoms are the same as apoplexy, the causes of apoplexy are the same as those described above.Creation of Civilization, 1952, unpublished manuscript

“Reiteki Byōki: Seishinbyō to Tenkan” is from a manuscript that was never published while Meishu-sama was alive. Neither was “Reiteki Byōki: Seishinbyō to Tenkan” ever previewed by Meishu-sama in any of the church’s periodicals. “Reiteki Byōki: Seishinbyō to Tenkan” is counted as the fourth chapter of the third part, “Shūkyō” (“Religion”) of Meishu-sama’s project book, Bunmei no Sōzō (Creation of Civilization), but when it was first printed in a document for internal executive use only, “Reiteki Byōki: Seishinbyō to Tenkan” was formatted as the third subsection (out of three in total) of a chapter titled “Reiteki Byōki” (“Spiritual Diseases”). “Reiteki Byōki: Seishinbyō to Tenkan” has appeared in translation.
